Top Tips for Completing your Application

Personal Statement

When writing your personal statement think about the following questions

  • Why you want to work with young people?
  • What motivates you to teach your subject?
  • What justifies your subject having a place in the National Curriculum?
  • What experience do you have of working in a school? What lessons have you observed? Did they inspire you?
  • What other relevant experiences do you have which may be valuable in the teaching profession?
  • What skills do you have which will allow you to become an outstanding teacher?
  • What do you think are the rewards and challenges of being a teacher?

Always get someone else to proof read your application to check for spelling and grammar.

Work Experience

If you have any gaps in your education or employment history explain these in the work experience section so that schools know what you were doing during these gaps otherwise this will be flagged up as safeguarding matter.

If you haven’t yet gained any school experience but are due to take part in some, put this down on your application.

Put all experiences down that are related to working with children and young people.

Skills Test

It is advantageous although not necessary to pass these tests before applying as this will be noted on your application.

Book in your skills test as soon as possible as these book up quickly. If you are successful in gaining a place you will only have 6 weeks to pass your skills test otherwise your place becomes void.

Alliance

Make sure you research the alliance/partnership you are applying to, to ensure you are aware of all the schools in that alliance/partnership. Some alliances/partnerships are vast and cover a wide geographical area. This will avoid surprises as you can be placed in any school within an alliance/partnership.
