Design & Technology

KEY STAGE 4

Design and Technology Options

There are four areas of Design and Technology to choose from - all are very practical and are taught in a manner that pupils find engaging and fun!

Design and Technology bridges the gaps between many subjects. The theories of Maths and Science can be combined with the creativity of Art to produce outstanding work in the Design and Technology Department.

All areas of Design and Technology are Fun, Practical and help to develop key skills that are not only essential to life beyond school but can also help put so many other subjects in to context!

Product Design – Solving Problems through Design

  • Electronics
  • Food
  • Graphics
  • Product Design

Coursework – 60% Exam – 40%

Good Coursework + Exam = Outstanding Results!!

Please be aware that you can only pick ONE of the Design and Technology subjects.

Design and Technology Options at a glance:

Electronics

In Electronics you will be taught a range of skills to help you re-design and make many Electronic products.

You will make an aerodynamic car to race in a lesson, a complex two speaker iPod docking station; you will also use new SMART materials to enhance all projects you make – these include glow in the dark paints to LED that change through many different colours.

Electronics is a fun subject that uses all areas of the department.  You will be able to use some skills found in GRAPHICS, WOOD, METAL and PLASTIC to make all your Electronics Products!

I hope to plan some exciting Product design/Electronics trips to various places next year so that you can see how your skills can be developed beyond the classroom – last year we made a real hover craft at Manchester University that one of our pupils drove in a competition! (And our school won!)

Food

In Food you will get the chance to use all ingredients known to man and have the chance to experiment with them all to create your own dishes.

Food is a very practical subject, you must be committed enough to bring the ingredients to the practical lessons so that you can take part.

One of the many GCSE tasks is to study the work of a celebrity chef - and then design and make a range of ready meals that this chef could market for a major supermarket chain!

You would make the food, design the package – and even make the tray that the product would be sold in!  This is an exciting subject that requires you to think like a food product designer!

Product Design

In Product Design you will be taught a range of skills to help you re-design and make many products.  You will get the chance to design and make any product that you want, ranging from a model of a car to the next top end office chair!

All products that you own have been designed by a Product Designer!  It is the most exciting area if you are interested in things that are designed with care.

You will study some work by leading designers and make your own products in the same style.

You can use any material to design and make your products ranging from; wood, metal, plastics, SMART materials, Electronics, textiles and all graphic media.

I hope to plan some exciting Product design/Electronics trips to various places next year so that you can see how your skills can be developed beyond the classroom – last year we made a real hover craft at Manchester University that one of our pupils drove in a competition! (And our school won!)

Graphics

In Graphics you will be taught how to use many different Graphic skills and equipment to design and make Graphic products.  These could range from CD covers to graphic displays as found in shops to office stationary and new company logos.

Some of the work will be done using Photoshop, but there is an emphasis on hand drawing skills and sketching.

In Graphics you will design T-Shirts, Mugs and Promotional Materials.

Graphics is a core skill that is shared by all Designers and can bring out your creative flair!
