INTRODUCTION

There are 8 teachers in the St James’s Mathematics department. The Head of Maths is Mrs King. The pupils are taught in sets throughout the 5 years. Years 7 and 8 will be taught three lessons weekly and Year9 will be taught seven lessons over a fortnightly cycle. Homework is set in the form of either a written piece or an online homework. Pupils are expected to complete their homework thoroughly and on time. Pupils are also expected to have the necessary Maths specific equipment with them which is: a protractor, a pair of compasses and a scientific calculator for all lessons and exams as well as the basic school equipment. A variety of teaching resources are used in lessons with the aim of stimulating and engaging pupil learning in the subject these include; interactive resources and various software packages.

KEY STAGE 3

At the beginning of Year 7 all students are set according to their individual levels of attainment at Key Stage 2. The pupils are set in two halves of the year. The sets are reviewed regularly and set changes occur mid-way or at the end of the year after testing periods, and in between these times if deemed necessary. The pupils remain in two half year group sets until the end of year 8.

In year 9 the sets are changed and the pupils are set across the entire year group upon ability. This year is the beginning of the new 2017 Curriculum and will be a challenging year for the pupils.
